U.S. Marshals arrested an attempted murder suspect in LSU’s West Campus Apartments on Monday with LSUPD assistance.

Chase Mays, an 18-year-old who does not attend LSU, was arrested for attempted second-degree murder and the illegal use of a weapon for an incident that occurred last month.

According to WBRZ, Mays allegedly shot a man entering the Lucky Food Mart about 20 minutes off campus with a rifle on Jan. 19. The gunshot victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Agents with the marshals located Mays on campus in WCA Monday. According to LSUPD’s incident report, the Marshals secured a perimeter around the building and ordered Mays to surrender through a loudspeaker and by knocking on the door of the apartment.

Mays complied and was taken into custody.

LSUPD officers were notified that the marshals would begin an attempt to apprehend Mays.

“Anytime any law enforcement partner comes onto campus to do any type of activity, we are involved. But that is just so that we are aware of what is going on,” said LSUPD Sgt. Marlon Hawkins.

He assured that the marshals were not on campus for an LSU student and that the crime did not take place on campus.

The report said that Mays went to WCA to meet with an LSU student who was not involved in the crime.

The student with Mays explained to officers that she had attempted to get an Uber for the suspect, but he insisted that he was not leaving.

She also said she was afraid of contacting the police in case Mays overheard her. However, she was able to “obtain and hide” May’s firearm that he had brought with him before the marshals had arrived.

The investigation is still ongoing, an LSU spokesperson said.
