The No. 17 ranked LSU Tigers defeated Big 10 opponents Iowa 5-3 in Saturday’s first game of their doubleheader.
The Bayou Bengals scored first on an infield single from Tori Edwards in the first inning before doubling their lead in the second. Iowa would respond with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-1 after 2 and a half innings.
In the bottom of the third, LSU would find themselves with the bases loaded for Char Lorenz.
She lined a bases-clearing double to the left field wall, bringing three runs home for the Tigers.
Iowa would try to bring home another run thanks to an RBI fielder’s choice, making it 5-2. This score would hold until the later innings, where the Hawkeyes would attempt a comeback.
In the top of the 6th, Iowa would load the bases for Leah McAnally who then hit a fly ball deep enough to bring home the runner on third. LSU starter Jayden Heavener, who was excellent all game, got out of the jam, only allowing one runner to score.
Heavener would trot back to the circle in the top of the 7th looking to get the final three outs of the game. She would be successful, forcing three flyouts to close the game out.
This win brings the Tigers record to 3-0 in the LSU Invitational. They will look to sweep the weekend when they face Memphis Saturday night to finish the tournament.
