#20 LSU was coming hot off a series win against South Carolina, but the #3 Oklahoma Sooners would extinguish their fire Friday night after defeating the Tigers 3-2 in extra innings.
The Tigers led for most of the game, thanks to the help of Cece Cellura, who put up an impressive performance, pitching 7 innings and recording 3 strikeouts, only allowing the Sooners 10 hits.
Cellura feels like her team has a good shot at defeating the Sooners saturday after the devastating loss.
“It’s heartbreaking, but I know that tomorrow we’re prepared, we’re ready. We went through a couple of their arms so I’m sure that our hitters are good.”
Jalia Lassiter was LSU’s top offensive performer, putting the first run on the board by sending a solo shot over the wall in the bottom of the third. Lassiter ended the night with a .348 batting average and went 3-4 at the plate.
Neither team would score until the top of the 7th, when Oklahoma’s Kendall Wells hit a single down the right field line, sending two runs to the plate, putting the Sooners up 2-1.
The Tigers tied up the game in their next at-bat, with Alix Franklin’s single sending Lassiter home for the second time. However, LSU would fail to answer to the Sooner’s 3rd run off a sac-fly in the top of the 8th, leading them to lose 3-2.
0 errors were recorded for either team, and LSU Softball Head Coach Beth Torina feels that her team played a flawless game, and knows they have the potential to beat the Sooners.
“One more hit, one more pitch, one more anything and I think we have them…I think we’ll keep going, we have a good plan.”
The Tigers must play their very best in order to beat Oklahoma, and the Sooners need to make sure they don’t get too comfortable. The Tigers will take on the Sooners for the second game of the series Saturday morning at 11 CST in Tiger Park.
