LSU Baseball defeated South Carolina 7-0 on Sunday afternoon to complete the SEC series sweep, the first of the season for LSU.
Zac Cowan got the start today for LSU and he was able to shut out the Gamecocks in six innings of work, tallying seven strikeouts and giving up only two hits.
Cowan threw 82 pitches and of those 82, 60 were strikes. The Gamecocks couldn’t figure him out and Cowan credits his performance to keeping it simple and getting ahead in counts.
“Get ahead of hitters and when I was behind, you know landing offspeed stuff for strikes and kind of just pitching to my strengths and just doing what I do well,” Cowan said.
It wasn’t just Cowan; in the previous two games, William Schmidt and Marcos Paz got the starts for LSU and they were able to log quality time as well. As a whole, the LSU pitching staff executed the game plan well over the weekend.
“And I think everyone out there who got the chance this weekend just kind of did their job and didn’t try to do anything that, you know, they can’t do,” Cowan said. “Just try to stay within themselves and you know, doing what they do well.”
Cade Arrambide entered a new role this season as the main guy behind the plate, but freshman Omar Serna Jr. has been able to take off some of the load for Arrambide and both have benefited as a result.
“I think it’s doing both of us a favor,” Arrambide said. “You know, having that game where we can get off our feet and still get the at-bats that we need and I think it’s made both of us better.”
In the win, the lineup for the Tigers included four freshmen in Mason Braun, Omar Serna Jr, William Patrick and Jack Ruckert. They have all stepped up to the plate and are immediately contributing to winning. The young guys accounted for six of the seven runs in the victory.
“I mean, all those guys are ultra, ultra, ultra talented,” Arrambide said. “You know it was only a matter of time before each of them, you know, got their opportunity to shine.”
Next, LSU will face off against the Tulane Greenwave on Tuesday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Alex Box Stadium.
