An LSU fraternity member accused of third-degree rape voluntarily surrendered himself at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on May 5, authorities told the Reveille Wednesday.
He was taken into custody and placed on a $20,000 bond, booking records show.
According to an LSUPD incident report, Phoenix Hernandez, 21, allegedly raped a woman in the Delta Chi fraternity house on April 2.
Hernandez had previously been detained by LSUPD and released on April 16. He was questioned by police and remained adamant that he did not remember having sex with the woman.
Before that interrogation, an LSUPD officer recovered audio messages of Hernandez allegedly boasting about having sex with the woman. These messages were sent to a friend hours after the woman left his room and woke up in the hallway of the Delta Chi house.
WBRZ reported that Hernandez also admitted on April 12, over a phone call with the woman, that they had sex. The woman called Hernandez two days later with an LSUPD officer present. He retracted his previous statement and said that he could not remember if they had sex and felt pressured to admit when she asked two days earlier.
This incident marks the second sexual assault case to be reported on LSU’s campus since the beginning of the year.
