LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette will leave the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta without the positional award he was in contention for, but he did receive another honor for his memorable 2015 season.
Fournette was named a Walter Camp First-Team All-American, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Thursday evening before the start of the College Football Awards Show. Senior offensive tackle Vadal Alexander received Walter Camp Second-Team All-American honors.
Fournette is the 67th Walter Camp First-Team All-American in program history but is just the fourth ever Tiger running back to be selected to the team, according to a release from the football program.
Fournette, though, missed out on the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s premier running back. Alabama junior running back Derrick Henry, who was also named the Walter Camp Player of the Year, was this year’s recipient of the highest running back honor.
Fournette still leads the nation in rushing yards per game but trails Henry and Stanford sophomore running back Christian McCaffrey in total rushing yards. Both Henry and McCaffrey played two more games than Fournette
Fournette broke former LSU tailback Charles Alexander’s single-season rushing record in the Tigers’ 19-7 win against Texas A&M to close out the regular season. He has 1,741 rushing yards on the year to go with 18 touchdowns.
Despite no Doak Walker Award, Fournette joins Alexander as Walter Camp All-Americans
