Three men were arrested Sunday and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison each on one count of aggravated rape.
Robert L. Mills Jr., 40, and Malcom Demal Baker, 21, both of 8836 Avis Ave., and Garnett Brown, 40, 1166 Savannah View Dr., allegedly raped a 23-year-old woman off Alvin Dark Avenue after the LSU v. Florida football game Saturday night.
Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesperson, said the victim was intoxicated from tailgating and looking for her car when the three men offered her a ride. McKneely said the last thing she remembered was sitting on a couch in Tiger Plaza Apartments at 4445 Alvin Dark Ave.
“She also said she did not recall consenting to having sex with the guys,” McKneely said. “All three guys admitted to having sex [with her], and they said that she consented. She was still at their apartment when she woke up.”
McKneely said he was unable to confirm if the victim was a University student.
Maj. Lawrence Rabalais, LSUPD spokesman, said he was not aware of this particular instance. He said LSUPD does not see similar cases often.
“This isn’t something that happens very often, thank goodness,” Rabalais said. “I think alcohol played a huge role in this, and I think [students] need to be more responsible with their drinking. They cannot drink to the extent to where they don’t remember things or know who they are with.”
Rabalais reminded students to take precautions on game day.
“If you come to the game, try to come with friends and leave with friends,” Rabalais said. “Naturally, if you have a group of people that’s less likely to happen. Walk in well-lit areas. And if you meet someone and don’t know who they are, don’t walk off by yourself with them.”
Jennifer Russell, elementary education junior, said she often tailgates and attended Saturday’s game.
“There are always cops walking around,” Russell said. “I actually feel pretty safe on game day.”
Russell said she does not drink on game days as an extra precaution since many people are on campus. She said she walks home after games and feels safe doing so.
“There are so many people out,” Russell said. “And you don’t know who to trust. But I do think it’s safe.”
