The Daily Reveille sports staff shares their thoughts and score predictions following LSU’s 22-21 win over Auburn.
Legend of Cole Tracy| Glen West
Not since Colt David has there been a placekicker at LSU that has cemented himself in Tiger history. Not until Cole Tracy came along that is.
David’s infamous fake field goal, over the head toss from Matt Flynn that put No. 2 LSU in front of No. 12 South Carolina by two scores still lives on.
Tracy’s field goal seems that big because of the unusually low expectations for this LSU team coming into the season. Ranked 25, universally picked to lose to both Miami and Auburn, the Tigers have defied the odds.
The 42-yard game-winning field goal from Tracy is one of those moments LSU fans will remember for a long time, how long that is depends on what this team can do as the season progresses.
A win is a win | Brandon Adam
No one is going to remember sophomore right tackle Austin Deculus’ false starts, junior right guard Damien Lewis’ illegal downfield block, or even sophomore Andre Anthony’s roughing the passer call.
They probably even remember LSU’s offense sputtering for most of the game after they took a 10-0 lead up until junior quarterback Joe Burrow found junior wide receiver Derrick Dillon.
They’ll only remember Burrow leading the team down the field with assistance of some pass interference calls and senior kicker Cole Tracy’s game winner.
Sometimes you win and sometimes you win ugly, but they all count the same. LSU gritted out a win on the road against Auburn and moved to 3-0 on the season.
The number in the win column is all that matters.
It’s not all about stats | Kennedi Landry
Joe Burrow may have cemented himself as the quarterback LSU’s has been waiting for, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at the stats.
With a 46.2 completion percentage, 540 yards and three touchdowns on the season, it would seem that not much has changed from LSU’s previous quarterbacks. But for every dropped pass and overthrown ball, Burrow has completed even bigger ones.
It was even enough to gain SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Whether is was the 71-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Dillon in the second to last drive of the game or the screen to Stephen Sullivan on 4th-and-seven during the final drive, Burrow has proven that he can make big plays.
For someone who hasn’t played in a “real” game since high school, Burrow played with all the confidence in the world.
If he can carry that confidence through the rest of LSU’s tough schedule and start completing more passes, the Tigers will be a tough offense to face.
Chris Caldarera | Historic season on the horizon?
Not since 1976 has a college football team defeated two AP top-10 opponents in the first three weeks of the season. LSU’s upset against Auburn also represents the first time since 2011 that the Tigers defeated two top-10 teams in the same season.
History would predict that the Tigers are heading for a special season this year, and it seems the national media agrees. In the latest AP poll rankings, LSU has risen to No. 6 in the country, and excitement is beginning to fill the streets of Baton Rouge.
While it’s possible that the Tigers could continue to defy expectations in 2018, any hope of making the College Football Playoff should be tempered. LSU still has a bevy of top-25 opponents to play, and the Tigers will have to execute better than they did at Auburn to make it through the rest of the year unscathed.
It appears that those who predicted LSU to be a five-loss team this season will be wrong, and while defeating Auburn at home is certainly a statement win, this 2018 team still has much more to prove before they are recorded in the history books.
