It may seem out of the norm but LSU Gym raked in another away win, this time only 2 miles down the road.
Not only was this the team’s highest total this season but it also counts as a road meet to raise their National Qualifying Score. Once a year they can compete within a 30 mile radius of campus, taking away travel stresses, Head Coach Jay Clark says this meet works well for the team and did exactly what they needed it to.
“It couldn’t have been better,” Clark said. “We had new people competing that we hadn’t seen and weren’t sure what that was going to look like, and we got our highest team score, and it was on the road.”
Friday’s meet brought in high scores from the usual culprits like Kailyn Chio with a 9.950 on bars and Aleah Finnegan with a 9.925 on beam. Sierra Ballard brought in a career high 9.950 winning her first ever floor title. Some new faces were also on display in exhibition spots giving them some confidence in a meet scenario.
“It’s reassuring to know that we have some tested commodities that are available to us that we had not had before,” Clark said.
Fans got to see Haleigh Bryant back in the All-Around for the second week in a row. Though there may be a few lingering jitters it looks like she’s settling back in just fine, with a score of 39.725 winning the All-around title.
“I felt really more calm and confident out there,” Bryant said. “I think I was just trying to be too perfect, since it was my first time back in the all-around. I really just wanted to be relaxed and lean on my team. We did our normal gymnastics and I think it showed.”
With a final score of 198.125 and raising their NQS the team is set up nicely for the rest of the season. They’ll be back in the PMAC on March 7th for the Georgia Gymdawgs at 7:30.
