Former LSU Women’s Basketball great Sylvia Fowels is set to be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame this Saturday in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The two-time WNBA champ, and two-time WNBA Finals MVP played 15 seasons in the pro leagues as a center with the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx, securing her rings in 2015 and 2017.
The Miami native played for the Lady Tigers from 2004-2008 and was an undeniable force on the team. Her skills helped push the Tigers to a dominant 125-21 record, as well as three SEC Championship titles and four NCAA Final Four appearances.
Fowles’ collected a school and SEC record of 86 double doubles as well as becoming the fifth player in LSU Women’s Basketball history to reach the 2,000 point milestone. The former Tiger also dominates the LSU record books in career rebounds with 1,570, career blocked shots with 321 and career free throws made with 494.
Throughout her iconic career in Baton Rouge, Fowles collected many accolades and awards including being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC Player of the year, and making the First-Team All-American all during her senior season.
Fowles’ legacy is honored in the Lady Tiger’s program to this day. Her jersey now hangs in the raptors of the PMAC after having her No. 34 retired in 2017. She is also a member of the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Fowels’ historic career in Baton Rouge drew the attention of WNBA coaches and owners leading her to be selected as the 1-2 pick in the 2008 Draft. Her legacy in the pro leagues will forever be cemented with familiar legends such as Kim Mulkey and Seimone Augustus.
Fowels’ induction ceremony will begin at 5:45 on Saturday at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville with streaming available on ESPN+.
