This year’s season opener will go down in LSU football history.
It’s Tiger versus Tiger. Purple and gold against orange and purple. All eyes are on this Week 1 matchup, and the debate over who gets the “Death Valley” moniker may finally be put to rest.
In anticipation of the high-stakes match, the Reveille sports staff made predictions for how LSU’s season opener may go.

There’s a lot of pressure on LSU to break its season-opener curse and start off strong. The team has adopted a “1-0 mentality,” but is it enough to get them over the hump?
LSU brings a lot to the field, with a seasoned Garrett Nussmeier returning alongside Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks. Despite that, the Tigers lost a lot, and their offensive line is a worry. That in combination with LSU’s history of struggling on the road, I see the aftermath of this game bleeding purple and gold – in all the wrong ways.
I do think it’ll be close for much of the game, but Clemson seems more fit to finish under pressure. I predict it’ll be 21-22 through three quarters, with LSU going for a two-point conversion following its third touchdown, but it won’t be enough to suppress Cade Klubnik. I won’t be surprised if LSU loses it in familiar fashion: at the last minute on a play that should’ve been stopped.
Prediction: LSU 22-28 Clemson

Five years is a long time to go without winning your season-opener, and I think the curse could be broken this year – barely.
It’s no secret that the Tigers added some firepower in the offseason. That, combined with veteran leadership like Garrett Nussmeier and Harold Perkins, makes a hard team to beat on paper. While Clemson’s definitely not a team you want to face on the road, I think LSU will be slightly stronger on the road this year. Not to mention, Clemson has lost against the last three SEC teams it has faced.
I think Clemson and Cade Klubnik’s ability to run will get them on the board first, but Nussmeier will eventually find some angles and LSU will keep it close. Despite all of the uncertainties of this team, I see them getting lucky in the fourth.
Prediction: LSU 30-27 Clemson

For a team that hasn’t won a season opener in the past five games, there couldn’t be a harder matchup for LSU heading into Week 1.
LSU brought in a haul of transfers this past offseason that has given head coach Brian Kelly one of the most talented rosters at LSU.
However, the one question mark for LSU is its offensive line. Losing four starters from last season and planning on rotating offensive linemen for Week 1 is a bad combination against one of the best defensive lines in the country.
The game is won in trenches, and I believe that the Clemson pass rush will be too much for the LSU offensive line and will be the deciding factor in the game.
Prediction: LSU 27-34 Clemson

Despite the rumors, the noise and LSU’s five-season opening game losing streak, head coach Brian Kelly knows what it takes to win big football games. For the first time in his LSU tenure, Kelly has a roster stacked with absolute animals on both sides of the football, along with a staff that knows how to get every ounce out of them.
Poise from quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will be critical against Clemson’s tough defensive front. Still, Nussmeier has repeatedly showcased his ability to hit tight windows under pressure and connect on shots down the field.
Defensively, Harold Perkins and brothers Whit and West Weeks are expected to be major playmakers in Blake Baker’s chaos-inducing defense. With Baker and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan steering the ship, LSU enters “Death Valley” ready. I believe the Tigers leave Clemson with a statement win, surviving a fourth-quarter showdown behind a huge defensive stand to find themselves 1-0 for the first time in the Kelly era.
Prediction: LSU 31-28 Clemson

LSU is getting ready to face off Clemson, a team that’s expected to come in swinging full-force with an improved defensive line under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen.
Allen was appointed to his position for this year’s season back in January, and all of the defensive reports coming back from the Tigers’ fall camp have been nothing short of “energetic.”
So, what does this mean for LSU?
Well, it’s going to need an indestructible offense. We have to hope Garrett Nussmeier’s response time has improved as much as we’ve heard from fall camp if the Bayou Bengals want to come close to countering what the Tigers are bringing to the table.
If LSU’s offensive line holds up, it’ll be more than ready for this cat fight against Clemson and will give LSU a chance to put a season-opening win on the board for the first time in five years.
Prediction: LSU 29-28 Clemson

It’s hard to think of a quarterback in a better situation than Cade Klubnik. He has a full returning offensive line, a next-level ability to make plays and one of the best defenses in the country to back him up.
It’s also hard to think of a more confident quarterback than Garrett Nussmeier. Coming off of an over 4,000-yard passing season, with eight SEC starts of experience and a loaded receiver room, LSU will be tough to stop.
Without a doubt, this game will be won in the trenches. It’ll be about pressuring the quarterback and making them uncomfortable.
This game reminds me a lot of when Ole Miss came to LSU in 2024. The defense will get beat, but can the Tigers make that stop when they need it?
