LSU Football Head Coach Brian Kelly spoke to the media after the loss to Ole Miss in Oxford.
Visibly disappointed with the loss, Kelly made it a point that his team is not playing as a unit on the field. He says he sees flashes of the offense and defense playing well individually, but complementary football is how you win games.
“When you put it all together for four quarters, we did not play complementary football, which you have to do in this league. You have to be able to complement your offense and defense, and we were out of sync with that… We just couldn’t get this whole group playing together.” Coach Kelly said.
Although Coach Kelly acknowledged quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s struggles today, he made it clear that this loss was not any one player’s fault.
“I mean, look, Garrett Nussmeier has got to play better. Every player on offense has to play better. And then we have to be more consistent on defense.” Kelly said. “We have to be better on third down. And that’s not just Garrett, we’ve got to get open.”
Kelly also spoke on the lack of discipline from his team in the fourth quarter, where they racked up many penalties. He knows his team can be aggressive and make their presence known on defense without the careless mistakes.
“We had four penalties on the one drive, you know, and they’re our best players. And so you know whether it’s a PI or a late hit, those are our best… you want your team to be aggressive, but we have to play with composure.” Kelly said. “That drive was so different from anything they’ve shown this year, and that’s what makes it frustrating. For them too.”
LSU will have a week to regroup as they go into a bye week before hosting the Gamecocks of South Carolina on October 11th in Tiger Stadium.
