An LSU student has been released on bond from East Baton Rouge Parish Jail after being arrested and booked following the protest that erupted at the Louisiana State University Center for Philanthropy regarding the process of choosing LSU’s next president.
The LSU Students for a Democratic Society formed the protest to make sure the next president will be a president that fights for all students. They were also holding up several signs that read “NO MAGA PRESIDENT” on the front.
Protesters wanted to express that out of the twenty members on the search committee only 1 of them is, considering it as unfair.
Several students were detained for the protest due to going over their given time limit in the meeting, with one student being booked.
While LSU has not chosen the next president yet, students wanted to make sure that decision would be held to a high degree.
“LSU fully supports lawful free expression. During today’s Presidential Search Committee meeting, everyone had the opportunity to register, speak, and be heard during the public-comment period, which was limited to remarks related to the posted agenda. Despite multiple warnings to adhere to the posted rules — specifically yielding the floor when the time expired — one individual exceeded the time limit, refused lawful directives, and was subsequently arrested for violating La. R.S. 14:329.5.
Additionally, outside the venue, six other individuals were arrested for interfering with that lawful arrest. In situations like this, our priority is the safety of all participants and the orderly conduct of university functions” Todd Woodward, Vice President of LSU Marketing & Communications said.
This is a developing story.
