An insect with a sweet name but a scary bite is creeping into Louisiana.
Commonly known as the kissing bug, this isn’t a friendly insect. These blood-sucking bugs are being spotted more often across the state.
They’re dark with orange stripes and can carry a parasite that causes Chagas disease — a serious illness that can damage the heart if left untreated.
Experts say the risk to the public is still low. They recommend sealing cracks around homes, keeping pets indoors at night and reporting sightings to state health officials.
The kissing bug has been present for decades and is found in at least 30 states, but concern over Chagas disease is bringing new attention to the insect.
The name “kissing bug” comes from its tendency to bite near the mouth. Moisture and carbon dioxide in a person’s breath can attract the insect.
Aaron Ashbrook, an entomologist at Louisiana State University, says residents should stay aware but not panic.
