LSU Football Head Coach Brian Kelly spoke to the media following the Tigers' victory against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
“I was pleased with some things that we did that we have not been doing,” Kelly said. “We ran the ball with more effectiveness and got the ball to Trey-Dez Green, which was important.”
Green had an impressive game, catching eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter.
“There are some mistakes that we will clean up, like the mishandled snaps, but [Garrett Nussmeier] is competing his tail off for us,” Kelly said in response to Nussmeier’s questionable calls throughout the game.
Nussmeier completed 20 of 33 passes for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
“What I loved was our competitiveness and how our guys competed for four quarters,” Kelly said.
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers was a dual threat going into this game, with 762 passing yards and 79 rushing yards.
“We needed to make sure LaNorris Sellers felt us, and we had to maintain pressure against him,” Kelly said.
LSU’s defense held Sellers to 124 passing yards and 19 rushing yards this game.
Kelly addressed the points that LSU gave up, including an interception by Peyton Williams for an intended touchdown pass.
“We found a way to win despite some mistakes out there that could be catastrophic, and we know we’ll have to eliminate them as the season progresses,” Kelly said.
Coach Kelly and the team will look for another SEC win against No. 20 Vanderbilt Saturday, Oct. 18, in Nashville.
