St. Gabriel Mayor Lionel Johnson Jr. and Central Mayor Wade Evens announced Thursday the start of a new rivalry, the Mayor’s Cup.
The first football game featured Central at Woodlawn. The Panthers came out strong in the first three quarters, and had the lead once during the second quarter.
Then the fourth quarter hit, and the Panthers could not keep up with the Wildcats’ offense. Max Gassiot co scored on three consecutive drives and won 38-21.
The Wildcats not only won the Mayor Cup trophy, but also the sliver of land that the two cities share near the Amite River.
Central starts district play Friday against Catholic.
