The 13th Gate has been a Halloween staple in Baton Rouge since 2002, attracting visitors from near and far to experience this nationally known fright fest.
Many people don’t realize the creative talent that brings horror to life behind the scenes–from hair and makeup, to costuming, and the scare actors who make guests scream every night.
Head Makeup Artist SarahBess Brown is in her 17th season at the haunted house and says she loves making the fake look real.
“The makeup room is very creative. We have to have a creative space here and a safe space because it’s so crazy outside,” Brown said.
With her team of about 15 people, Brown transforms a cast of humans into guests’ worst nightmares in just an hour and a half. Most transformations take only three to five minutes—and she loves every second of it.
“If you don’t love this, you’re not going to put your heart into it. It’s an amazing place to work,” Brown said.
The cast is a mix of people. Some seasonal workers who just love Halloween, others pursuing careers in theater, and even students balancing school.
Carly Mershon, an LSU student, says juggling both can be tricky.
“A lot of it is just trying to prioritize getting work done in the morning because we get here at 5 p.m., and we don’t get home until really late,” Mershon said.
Cast member Michael C. came from teaching at a Christian youth theater to performing at the 13th Gate. He originally just wanted to help out—but ended up finding a family.
“The friendships I have are long-lasting. I made my family here, and I’m super accepted. It’s just an absolute blast and a great opportunity,” Michael said.
While those waiting in line may not know exactly what’s lurking inside, the cast and crew are always ready to deliver the scare.
This is the last regular weekend the 13th Gate will be open. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with their annual Flashlight Fright taking place on November 7th and 8th.
