LSU Women’s Basketball players Flau’jae Johnson and Bella Hines addressed the media after the Tigers’ dominant 115-26 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the PMAC.
Johnson, who stepped into a leadership role this season as one of four seniors, spoke about the team’s chemistry.
“We really like each other,” Johnson said when asked about the team’s dynamic. “I think everybody’s pulling for everybody, which is really big… and we’re just eager to learn. We challenge each other.”
Johnson finished the night with 17 points, setting the tone through the first half and leading the team throughout the remainder of the game.
Throughout the exhibition matches and the first two regular-season games, she has shown both playing consistency and leadership towards the five freshmen.
“It’s fun, you know, leading [the freshmen]. They do listen, and I feel like they take in… all the things that we try to tell them, and it’s just… a good group to lead with,” Johnson said. “I wish I could’ve spent all four years with this group, like they’re amazing.”
Freshman guard Bella Hines was able to secure 14 points in her second game as a Tiger.
“My mindset going into the game is just to play as hard as possible,” Heins said.
“Coach Mulkey’s very big on defense, so I try to go in there and just be on point on defense… she always says if you play defense, I have a place for you on the team.”
Hines earned her first-year spot on the team as a strong defensive player.
“I feel like defense is a big energy swing,” Hines said.
“Not a lot of people like to play defense so I feel that’s what kind of separates me from other players, and being able to take that charge, I mean, it electrifies the team, the crowd, everybody. So I just feel like defense is a really big part of my game.”
LSU’s defensive focus showed throughout the game, holding SLU to just 26 points in four quarters.
Johnson will return to her hometown on Sunday with the rest of the Lady Tigers, where they will face Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia, at 1 p.m.
