LSU baseball head coach Jay Johnson spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon to preview the Tigers’ upcoming SEC series against the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs.
With an impressive weekend series sweep over South Carolina and Tuesday night’s 13-6 win over the Tulane Greenwaves, LSU’s postseason hopes are still alive.
However, with the uncertainty of sophomore right-handed pitcher Casan Evans and senior outfielder Chris Stanfield returning to the starting lineup this weekend, Johnson knows how crucial winning this series is and how capable it is for his team to win.
“I think we’ve taken the bullets, been dragged through the mud, headstepped on,” Johnson said. “All of those things and we’re still alive. The best soldier is the one that’s not afraid to be killed. There’s literally nothing to be afraid of.”
“[Georgia] is a good team, plays good at home,” Johnson said. “I think it’s one where it’s baseball where the team that plays the best usually wins. I’ll be like one of those kinds of deals.”
With six games left in the regular season, Georgia (38-11,18-6 SEC) looks to be LSU’s biggest test. The Bulldogs are ranked No.4 in the country in batting average (.325 BA) and aren’t slowing down.
Meanwhile, LSU (29-21, 9-15 SEC) is emerging onto the scene with its quality-at-bats. Over the last five games, the Tigers have averaged nine runs per game, mainly due to sophomore Cade Arrambide and junior Steven Milam producing up at the plate. With this in mind, Johnson hopes for this weekend to have the same outcome.
“Guys are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Johnson said. “I think our coaching staff … has done a great job navigating some of the injury things with getting the improvement in the offense and competing really well.”
“I think a lot of guys that weren’t in the forefront of this thing, gave everything that they had and put us in position to win. I’m proud of them for that.”
LSU travels to Athens, Georgia this weekend to face No. 6 Georgia with game one starting Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
