The No. 24 Tigers opened spring season by traveling to Florida this weekend to participate in the Key Biscayne Invitational.
Tournament play concluded today in dramatic fashion, freshman Harrison Kennedy capped off the weekend with an epic three-set super tiebreaker — 7-6(1), 1-6, 10-6 — against Denver’s Max Krammer. However, the rest of the team struggled, as Kennedy’s win was the only LSU victory of the day.
“It was a good win for Harrison who is trying to get back to a strong level of play,” LSU coach Jeff Brown said. “It was a tough day overall, but I feel like everyone competed well.”
The tournament began Sunday when LSU picked up four singles victories against No. 20 Michigan. The Tigers were led by senior Stefan Szacinski, who defeated the No. 48 player in the nation — Vlad Stefan — in straight sets.
The Tigers won another four matches against Texas when play resumed on Monday. Sophomore Chris Simpson earned a major upset for the Tigers with a straight-set victory over Texas’ nationally ranked Nick Naumann.
“We had some good individual performances today,” LSU coach Jeff Brown said at the conclusion of day two. “Simpson and [freshman] Boris Arias had good confidence boosters since they were a couple of guys who lost on day one.”
The doubles teams didn’t fare as well, picking up only one victory from seven matches in two days of tournament play. The Tiger’s sole victory came on day two of the tournament, when senior Roger Anderson and freshman Tam Trinh picked up an 8-3 win over Michigan’s Stefan and Barrett Franks.
LSU will now set it’s sights on the beginning of the dual match season. The Tigers will begin at home against Southern Miss on January 21st.
“We need to get everyone healthy and ready to go for dual season,” Brown said. “We need to continue to work hard to prepare, and we are excited to compete at home to open things up.”
