Fall break has snuck up on us again and we find the perfect opportunity to catch up on our favorite shows or start a new series on Netflix. The break is actually perfectly timed with the start of the new TV season (thank you, TV gods), so if there’s a returning show you were behind on, you’ll have this four day weekend to binge your heart out before next week’s new episodes.
So, grab your snuggie and check out a few of the shows below to keep you occupied during the break.
Comedy:
1) Parks and Recreation
Do not let anything led by Amy Poehler pass you by. With each passing season, “Parks and Recreation” has only gotten funnier. Stick through the bumpy first season and you won’t regret it.
2) Orange is the New Black
The only bad part about “Orange is the New Black” is how quickly time seems to go by when you’re binge-watching it. Who would have thought a show set in a women’s prison would have one of the best character developments and narratives of any show on both Netflix and actual television? Don’t be fooled by its record of being called a comedy, this show definitely knows how to get dark.
3) Arrested Development
This show is definitely one of the most underrated comedies to date. Thankfully, Netflix brought back the Bluth family back for one more season last year and put them back on the map.
4) New Girl
“New Girl” captures the very essence of the highs and lows of being a 20-something in ways that you can’t imagine. With only 3 seasons on Netflix, this is a great, quick show to start watching during the break.
What I’m watching: 30 Rock
I know, where have I been for the last 8 years? As a huge Tina Fey fan, I’m actually embarrassed at the fact that I’ve only seen a few episodes of the series over the years. I can’t wait to finally watch it from start to finish.
Drama:
1) Les Revenants
If you don’t mind reading subtitles, this French zombie drama is a can’t-miss. The closest English version of this show is “Resurrected” on ABC, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the quality of its French counterpart.
2) Parenthood
This show is for anyone who needs a break from the brooding anti-heros and unrealistic plot lines that have sabotaged most of today’s TV shows. The Bravermans are a wacky, yet endearing, family that will make you feel much better about how crazy your family is.
3) House of Cards
Even if you’re not into political dramas, I promise, you won’t regret jumping into the twisted world of Frank Underwood. Due to the high quality and unapologetic plot twists, this Netflix original is more like an exciting 26 hour movie than your typical television series.
4) Mad Men
The final season of “Mad Men” airs next spring, so don’t miss this chance to catch up on the first six seasons to prepare yourself.
What I’m watching: Top of the Lake
I absolutely love Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson on “Mad Men,” so it’s safe to say that she’s the main reason why I want to check out this award-winning mini-series.
Honorable mention: Gilmore Girls
The classic show featuring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as the fast-talking mother-daughter duo officially made it’s Netflix debut today! If you’ve never seen the series, I definitely recommend you jump right in and get back to me about whether your Team Dean, Jess, or Logan.
