Louisiana’s gubernatorial candidates for the 2015 elections have made countless television attack ads against one another.
“Pretty much all of the government ads for Louisiana so far that I’ve seen have been attack ads,” president of AdFed Nichole Wierschem said. “I feel like somebody does an attack ad, so then they respond with an attack ad…”
According to CNN, attack ads are effective because people are more likely to remember negative information than positive.
Some say that the use of attack ads by Louisiana’s gubernatorial candidates show that they are not afraid of conflict. Others, however, do not view the ads as a positive thing.
“I personally find that whenever a candidate or candidates attack each other, I find it to be a turnoff,” LSU junior Drake Boudreaux said. “I don’t really appreciate it, to be honest.”
LSU junior Brook Maraist added, “It’s really important to focus on what you are going to do, because if you just keep talking about someone else, you’re not really giving the voter any information about you.
Students say that the advertising they see via social media is more influential on their opinions of candidates than any ad on they may see on television.
“One of the major trends that is happening in advertising is that television is becoming less and less effective because of the rise of digital and social media,” Wierschem said. “That’s where the future of advertising is. One post can hit thousands of people for a fraction of the cost.”
