LSU women’s basketball coach Van Chancellor was in too good a mood to criticize his team after its performance against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday. The Lady Tigers fell behind four times in the first half against the Lady Lions. But LSU used a 16-0 run in the second half to pull out a 65-40 win Thursday night in the PMAC.”Southeastern [Louisiana], they did a nice job of playing us tonight,” Chancellor said. “Their coach, with what they had, did a whole lot better job than I did with what I have.”LSU limited Southeastern Louisiana to 24.6 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers.”We had 22 turnovers because of their outstanding defense,” said Southeastern Louisiana coach Lori Davis Jones.Junior guard Allison Hightower said LSU’s defense has the potential to be as good as LSU’s recent Final Four teams.Chancellor didn’t share the same sentiment.”Do you see No. 34 out there?” he said, referring to former Lady Tiger All-American and current WNBA player Sylvia Fowles. “No I don’t.”LSU took a 4-0 nothing lead on a Destini Hughes layup and a Courtney Jones jumper less than two minutes into the game.Southeastern kept it close on a 3-pointer by junior guard Quantae Thomas to make the score 4-3. Lady Lions senior forward Kristy Carlin hit an off-balance shot to give Southeastern a 5-4 lead more than four minutes in.Southeastern Louisiana kept its momentum going on a 3-pointer by junior guard Kim Edmonson for an 8-4 advantage.”The first about 10 or 15 minutes, we didn’t play good,” Hightower said. “We weren’t playing that hard.”Junior guard Andrea Kelly tied things up at 8 on a jumper with 12:40 left in the first frame.LSU senior forward Kristen Morris helped the Tigers regain the lead at 12-8 with two straight baskets. Southeastern Louisiana kept it close on a 3-pointer by senior guard Charinee Mitchell to close the gap to 12-11.Mitchell hit another 3-pointer minutes later to give Southeastern Louisiana a 16-13 lead.Southeastern Louisiana shot 7-for-26 from behind the arc. The Lady Lions hit 5-of-13 3-point shots in the first half but only 2-of-13 in the second half.”We usually do make a lot more threes,” Carlin said. “We’re very confident. We have a very good team.”Hightower said LSU wasn’t ready for the Lady Lions’ 3-point attack in the first half.”Toward the end of the game we kind of adjusted and tried to lock in on that,” she said.Southeastern Louisiana used a Carlin jumper for a 19-18 advantage with 5:43 left in the first half.It was the Lady Lions’ last lead of the game.”Why didn’t we stop the game?” Lori Davis Jones joked. “Everything broke loose after that.”The Lady Tigers regained the lead at 20-19 on a Courtney Jones layup.LSU led 29-19 at halftime behind the power of a driving Hightower layup and two Courtney Jones free throws.”They out-manned us a little bit,” Lori Davis Jones said. “They out-muscled us. They out-physicaled us. I don’t remember us coming off of very many clean screens.”The second half was a different story from the first, as LSU outscored Southeastern Louisiana 36-26, including the 16-0 run.The run started with a layup by freshman forward LaSondra Barrett and ended with a 3-pointer by Kelly. Five different Lady Tigers scored during the run.Sophomore guard Katherine Graham said the Lady Tigers made a conscious effort to run the floor as often as possible against the Lady Lions.”We knew that it would give us some easy points,” she said.Chancellor said his Lady Tigers picked up the intensity in the second half after allowing 22 rebounds in the first half.”We started pressing more, started gambling more, quit playing so conservative” he said.LSU plays Centenary on Saturday in Shreveport then takes a break before playing Florida State at home at 2 p.m. on Dec. 28.
