Alex Bregman and Will Harris have joined the list of former Tigers to win the MLB World Series. The two Astro standouts are the first former Tigers to win the World Series since Louis Coleman won with the Kansas City Royals in 2015.
The Astros defeated the Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7, with Bregman helping initiate the first two runs of the game in the first inning.
Bregman (2013-2015) and Harris (2002-2005) played big roles for Astros all season and in the playoffs. Bregman totaled five RBIs on seven hits in the World Series, and Harris allowed one run on one hit in four innings pitched across six games in the playoffs.
It was Bregman, however, who had one of the biggest moments in the World Series.
“He’s Alex Bregman,” said Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch following Bregman’s walk-off single in the 10th inning Game 5 to give the Astros a 13-12.
“I can’t think of a player that I’ve coached in my career that deserved that moment more than Alex,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri in a press release. “He was made for moments like that. I saw him deliver many, many times in those types of situations during his three years at LSU.”
When Bregman was asked following Game 5 who he always envisioned himself as when he was dreaming of playing in the World Series, he said New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who was 22 years old when he won his first championship with the Yankees.
And on Wednesday, the 23-year-old Bregman helped the Astros capture their first ever World Series in the team’s 56-year history.
It is the first time at the college and pro level that the two players have won the ultimate championship. Each player appeared in the College World Series twice for LSU, but were never able to win it.
