Grade: C
Interpol’s self-titled fourth album and first in three years contains all the requisite components of the band’s signature sound. Jagged guitars and taut bass lines swirl behind Paul Banks’ signature dark baritone. But this return to form works against the band, as the sound comes off more formulaic than inspired. While fans of the band will find a few songs to love — like “Lights” in all of its tense, towering passion — Interpol has failed to create an album that will cause any feelings other than the somberness Banks moans about throughout the record.
