Last year I had the opportunity to interview Carla Tejedo, one of LSU’s best golfers, right before she graduated and became a pro. This year it was my turn to ask questions to freshman, Rocio Tejedo who is now the best golfer of the LSU Women’s Golf Team. She has had an amazing season so far, with 6 top 5 finishes, including a second place a couple of weeks ago in the SEC Championship.
Her results have come, as no surprise, though she understands that she is facing the best amateur players in the world.
“Now all the players here play really good, they are ready for pro golf. So they all working really hard to achieving, and the details are the difference into winning and a top 5.”
Rocio competed against the best in April, at the most prestigious tournament, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, an event held in the same golf club as “The Masters”.
“Obviously it was amazing walking at Augusta, be there, tell everybody that you were there. The course was amazing. It felt like walking in a dream.”
Now is time for her and her teammates, to concentrate in the last stretch of the season with a very clear goal.
“Qualify for nationals and make it again into match play. I say maybe not win, because you don’t want to have that high of expectations, but our goal is giving us the chance to get into the final and give our 100% to get that trophy.”
After her season is over, she will return home to keep competing.
“I will compete for Spain in July, then I have the European Amateur, British Amateur, and will kind of depend on if I get picked to represent Europe and play the Arnold Palmer.”
This last two are an incentive for the end of her first collegiate season.
“There is more pressure going to the postseason. Also for myself to make it into these events.”
Her summer is full of golf, before heading back to Baton Rouge for the Fall semester.
“I have a week to rest and go on vacation but nothing else.”
