Three former LSU Tigers will meet on Sunday, Feb 4. at Super Bowl LII.
Ricky Jean-Francois, a defensive lineman for the New England Patriots, will face off against safety/cornerback Jalen Mills and punter Donnie Jones of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Jean-Francois will be playing in his second Super Bowl. In 2013 as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, Jean-Francois played in his first Super Bowl, but fell to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31 in New Orleans.
For Mills and Jones, this is their first appearance on the biggest stage in professional football.
A 17-year streak that dates back to 2002 began when former LSU great Kevin Faulk made his first appearance at Super Bowl XXXVI.
Since then, at least one LSU Tiger has played in the Super Bowl. The streak for consecutive years with players in the title game is tied with Georgia for the most in the Southeastern Conference.
Faulk, who was recently named the LSU Director of Player Development, has made a school-record five Super Bowl appearances and walked away victorious in three of those, the most in LSU history.
Sunday night, either Jones or Jean-Francois will join an elite group as Tigers who have won a national championship at LSU and a Super Bowl ring.
Thirteen former players have done so already with Brandon LaFell to be the most recent in 2015 with the Patriots. LaFell was part of the 2007 national championship team.
Jones, as a senior in 2003, helped the Tigers defeat Oklahoma for the BCS National Championship.
Jean-Francois was part of the 2007 national championship team that defeated Ohio State for the national title. He was named the defensive most valuable player for his performance.
Jean-Francois was drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the 49ers when he decided to forgo his senior season with the Tigers.
Eight different players from the 2003 national championship team have won a Super Bowl title and five members of the 2007 team have won.
Mills, a native of Desoto, Texas, was a four year starter for LSU and drafted in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He started the first 39 games of his career before suffering a broken ankle of preseason prior to his senior season.
Mills missed the first five games of his final season with the Tigers and though he returned, questions still loomed over his capabilities in the NFL.
Once a second or third-round projection, falling all the way to the seventh round wasn’t exactly the confidence boost that Mills needed.
However, as a second-year cornerback, Mills has made major impacts in the Eagles’ secondary. Mills has played in 31 games through two season so with 102 total tackles.
Maybe one of the most recognizable things about the former LSU star is his bright green hair that has earned him the nickname ‘Green Goblin.’
Kick off for Super Bowl LII is set for 5 p.m. at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
