LSU has long since been known as DBU, or defensive back university, because of its ability to produce NFL-caliber talent in the secondary.
In the Tigers’ 45-16 win over Ole Miss, it showed why LSU calls itself DBU.
Against a powerful offense lead by quarterback Jordan Ta’amu and backed up by elite receivers nicknamed the Nasty Wideouts in A.J. Brown, D.K. Metcalf and DaMarkus Lodge, the LSU defensive secondary limited them to just 178 yards passing, no touchdowns and an interception by sophomore safety Grant Delpit.
“This is one of those games when you have to step up and be a great defensive back,” said LSU cornerback Greedy Williams. “We knew it was going to be a challenge. So we just came in, worked hard the whole week and got prepared for them.
“No doubt, probably the best receivers we’ll play this whole year,” Williams said. “I told my guys that those guys were top guys and to come in and make big plays.”
Before this weekend, Brown lead Ole Miss receivers with 26 catches for 381 yards and three touchdowns. Metcalf totaled 18 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns. Neither neared that production against LSU.
As a leader in the secondary, Williams prepared his team all week to go against an elite group of receivers.
They rose to the occasion. Brown was the Rebels’ leading receiver, with nine catches for 72 yards. Ta’amu, who leads the Southeastern Conference in passing yards, was limited to 19-for-38 for 178 yards and a long of 35 to Brown.
“It was a big week, knowing who we were going against, knowing those top guys and top receivers in the nation,” Williams said. “It was just a bigger challenge for us. We had to prepare for it all week and I thought we were ready.”
“I feel like we had a great game,” Williams said. “We shut them out, played at a high level and matched those guys intensity. Just being LSU. Being DBU.”
Both sides of the ball were talking at each other all night, sometimes words of encouragement and others not so much.
“Just competing at a high level, at the end of the day,” Williams said. “I knew AJ.. Brown, I knew D.K. [Metcalf]. They were really encouraging me. Its just friendly competition, at the end of the day. DBU versus the Nasty Wideouts. We’re just out there talking and having fun with it.”
