The Southeastern Conference honored sophomore linebacker Jacob Phillips and senior kicker Cole Tracy after the two players’ performances in LSU’s 33-17 win over No. 8 Miami on Sunday.
In his first career start for LSU (1-0), Phillips had seven tackles and a 45-yard interception for a touchdown in the second quarter. The performance was good enough to earn SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Tracy, on the other hand, was not only making his first career start, but the game against Miami (0-1) was the kicker’s Tiger debut.
The Assumption College graduate transfer put on quite the performance and was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
He was 4-of-4 on field goals with makes from 43, 21, 21, and a school-record of 54 yards.
“We had confidence in Cole. And we seen the same thing in practice,” said LSU coach Ed Orgeron. “But, obviously, he had to do it in a game, and he did it. We believe in Cole. And I wish I had him for more than one year.”
