After just one season together, LSU and offensive coordinator Matt Canada have decided to go separate ways, according to a press release sent out by the school Friday night. 
“I want to thank Matt for his contribution here at LSU and wish him and his family the best,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in the release. “We have mutually agreed to part ways and go in a different direction offensively but are always grateful for the time and effort Matt made here at LSU.”
LSU and Canada have reportedly been in talks for week to split ways following the bowl game and has around $3 million left of his original contract. The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger reported that the school and Canada settled on a $1.7 million buyout. 
Canada was a highly sought out offensive coordinator around the country and things looked promising for LSU with a new style of offense based around presnap motions and shifts.  
LSU’s overall offense ranked No. 54 in college football compared to No. 59 in 2016, but the minimal success in the red zone ultimately hurt the Tigers the most. Under Canada, LSU’s offense ranked No. 105 in red zone conversions. They converted just 43 of 56 attempts during the season, according to cfbstats.com. 
As for the future of LSU’s offense, it is unclear. 
“We will identify a coach with a wealth of experience who is totally committed to the vision of the program and has the drive to do whatever it takes to see it through,” Orgeron said. 
“We have a lot of talent coming up on offense. We want to put our players in the best possible position to succeed which means improving our vertical passing game and developing our quarterbacks and wide receivers to be at their absolute best.”
