Through two days of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, the highlights for the LSU track and field teams came predominantly from the No. 1 Lady Tigers squad.
Before the seventh-largest crowd in Penn Relays history Saturday at Franklin Field, the second-ranked men’s team made the last day of the meet a fruitful one.
Led by senior Gabriel Mvumvure, LSU swept the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays and added two more event titles to increase its total to seven for the three-day event.
Juniors Keyth Talley and Horatio Williams and seniors Tristan Walker and Mvumvure opened day three for the Tigers by posting a time of 38.77 seconds, the second-fastest in meet history, to run away with the 4×100-meter title.
Just an hour later, junior Riker Hilton subbed for Talley for the 4×200-meter relay again along with Williams, Walker and Mvumvure and the quartet won the event by just one tenth of a second over rival Texas A&M with a time of 1:20.62 seconds.
Mvumvure then joined former LSU sprinter Tristan Holliday as the only LSU men’s sprinters ever to win the 100-meter dash at the Penn Relays, posting a wind-legal time of 10.33 seconds to clip TCU’s Charles Simon for the victory.
The hurdles were also a bright spot for LSU on Saturday, as freshman Jasmin Stowers notched the team’s fourth victory of the day by posting a mark of 13.16 seconds to win the women’s 100-meter event. Junior All-American Barrett Nugent took the runner-up in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.70 seconds.
