The LSU women’s golf team traveled to Lexington, Ky., last weekend for the Southeastern Conference women’s golf championship at the University Club of Kentucky.
LSU finished the tournament with some momentum Sunday improving two spots to tenth place after finishing last the first two rounds.
“Obviously, it wasn’t a great tournament for us, but it was good to improve on Sunday,” said junior golfer Devon Day.
Auburn won the championship, finishing 39-over-par while LSU shot 111-lover-par for the tournament.
Hazardous weather and a high, thick rough made things difficult for the Lady Tigers. Rain prevented LSU from finishing the practice round as more than an inch of rain soaked the course Thursday.
“It was the most difficult course we played this year,” Day said. “If you really weren’t at the top of your game, you weren’t going to score very well.”
Day and freshman Vicky Meyer were two bright spots for the Lady Tigers. Meyer finished 18-over-par and tied for 22nd place with Day contributing a 24-over-par performance, placing her in a tie for 33rd place.
LSU hopes Meyer will continue to improve and contribute as she delves deeper into her LSU career.
“She’s definitely a very important asset to the team,” Day said. “She’s doing great and has stepped up when we asked her to.”
The men’s golf team had the weekend off as they prepare for the SEC Championship this weekend in Sea Island, Ga.
The Tigers are coming off a fifth place 24-over-par finish at the Arkansas State University Classic last Tuesday.
Senior John Humphries led the Tigers in the 19-team field with a 1-over-par performance, placing him in a tie for fifth place overall.
It was his fifth top 10 performance of the season and his second top five finish.
Sophomore Heath West finished 4-over-par in a tie for 17th place, making it his fifth top 20 season of the year.
North Texas went home with the tournament trophy shooting 11-over-par. Host ASU, Nebraska, Iowa State and LSU rounded out the top five. It was the first tournament since the LSU Spring Invitational on March 2 that the Tigers have finished in the top five. The Tigers have placed in the top eight five times this season.
