With high crime rates in Baton Rouge, Police officers are always on high alert. The short staff officers are doing their best at responding to calls hastily. But one officer responded to a call that would change her life forever.
Baton Rouge Police Officer Jakiya Jones responded to an urgent call on May 9, 2024. Dispatched to an intersection, Jones arrived to find a woman on the brink of jumping off a bridge.
For Jones it was a natural instinct to do all she could to save this woman’s life. She immediately took action, using her instincts to save the woman’s life.
Officer Jakiya Jones recalls the night she received the call and her actions in safely rescuing the woman on the bridge.
“Just getting her to talk and kinda just cried out a little bit. When I saw my moment I kind of just nodded at my squad as they were on the bridge and closer, that I was going to take my chance and I did. I just grabbed and pulled back holding her as tight as I Could” Jones described.
Working as a first responder, Officer Jones is reminded of her love of saving lives to keep her going.
“Being able to save somebody and save a life gives them a chance to go back to their family. It puts them in a better head space” Jones said.
Her bravery did not go unrecognized. Recently nominated for the 2025 Outstanding First Responder Axon Award, Jones is now awaiting the final outcome after making it to the final round.
“I didn’t know that at the time what I was doing would be recognized. So, just to know that it was recognized and I’m being noticed for it was amazing” Jones exclaimed.
In the meantime, Jones continues to serve, responding to calls daily. She remains committed to her work, finding inspiration in every opportunity to save a life. Thank you Officer Jones and the Baton Rouge Police Department for keeping Baton Rouge safe.
