After sweeping Oklahoma in Norman last weekend, Tuesday night would be a very different story against a Nicholls State squad looking to avenge their previous loss to LSU earlier in the year, and defend home field.
The Colonels would strike first with a Chase Jans RBI single in the 3rd inning, and a Fisher Ingersoll two-RBI double would give Nicholls a 3-0 lead after five innings.
LSU would look to stop the bleeding and rally, and one star freshman would answer the call for the Tigers.
Right-Handed Pitcher William Schmidt would enter the game in the 6th inning and shut the door in the Clonels offense, racking up 8 strikeouts in 4 innings of work, rebounding from rough outings in previous weeks.
“Honestly everything was working for me tonight,” Schmidt said of his performance. “I was able to command the fastball, I landed the breaker for the first time in a while, it felt good.”
Schmidt would finally get his run support in the 7th inning, as a Tiger offense which struggled for most of the game would tally a five-run frame, capped off by a two-RBI single from LSU Center Fielder Chris Stanfield.
“Very tough and very together,” LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson said. “The best trait about these guys is that they show up.”
The two-run cushion would be more than enough for Schmidt to get the job done, tallying LSU’s 9th straight in and their 4th straight on this current road trip.
“I’m very proud of them for winning a game like this tonight,” Jay Johnson said.
LSU now looks ahead to another top-25 challenge against Auburn, with first pitch scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. from Plainsman Park.
