LSU has sold 10,546 commuter parking passes so far this school year, university Parking & Transportation confirmed to the Reveille Tuesday. The number is roughly 2,000 fewer than in recent years.
The university sold 12,451 and 12,967 commuter parking passes to students in the full 2024 and 2025 financial years, respectively, according to Parking & Transportation.
Parking & Transportation said that space for commuters on campus is diminished by 15% currently due to ongoing construction on campus, which accounts for part of the decrease in permits sold.
The most prominent construction impact on parking is in the Touchdown Village East Lot, where the university recently broke ground on new $215 million dorms which are expected to be completed by fall 2027. The lot has 1,221 total spaces, according to the Parking & Transportation website, and it’s entirely offline starting in October.
As it is most years, parking has been a point of frustration among LSU students so far this semester. As enrollment and admittance numbers continue to climb at the university, convenient parking space has become more valuable and harder to find.
In a presentation to the Faculty Senate Sept. 16, Parking & Transportation said it has no plans to add additional commuter parking.
The university is aiming toward a more pedestrian-friendly campus long-term, including eliminating parking to make the core of campus car-free, a proposal laid out in its 2017 Master Plan. The school will supplement central parking losses with its Park & Geaux system that shuttles students from remote lots on Skip Bertman Drive.
Though the number of 10,546 doesn’t represent a full financial year’s worth of sold permits, Parking & Transportation said it expects the number of commuter parking passes sold this financial year will reach 11,000, still short of previous years’ totals.
The commuter parking pass waitlist is still open, Parking & Transportation said.
