LSU Volleyball beat No. 23 Florida in a 3-2 upset for the first time since 2021.
Even after a slow start, LSU was able to shut down the Gators’ offense and regain possession of the match.
Florida won the first set 25-16, leaving LSU fans already uneasy about the possible outcome of the game.
“We just come out there with the same power that we always start with,” outside hitter Jurnee Robinson said. “We started off rocky at the beginning of the set, but we always figure out a way to come back, and we just have to figure that out. Just to start faster.”
In Friday’s match against Tennessee, Robinson reached a career-high 33 kills. Just two days later, she broke this record with 34 kills in the game against Florida.
LSU broke through in the second set, winning 25-22, and again in the third, reaching a 25-14 lead. This shift gave the Tigers the confidence they needed to push ahead and control the outcome of the game.
The Gators snapped back in the fourth set with a 25-22 win, sending the two teams into the fifth and final set.
Outside hitter Nia Washington held her own at the service line in the final set, which LSU dominated by scoring 15 points while holding Florida to just four, securing the win.
Robinson scored eight out of LSU’s 15 points in the final set.
“Even after Florida won the first set, I just felt like we still had control of the match,” Head Coach Tonya Johnson said. “I felt we came out in the fifth set and showed that.”
This was Coach Johnson’s first win against Florida since joining the program in 2022.
“Florida historically is a great program, and they’re still a great program today. And so anytime you can get a win against a great team like that, it's absolutely a good win for us.” Johnson said.
Coming off this huge win, LSU will face Alabama on the road on Friday, Oct. 10.
