Southern University has suspended the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity this week as the school investigates allegations of hazing, WAFB reports.
The suspension, announced during homecoming week, came as a shock to students on campus.
The chapter president received a letter from the university’s Student Leadership and Engagement office stating that the fraternity allegedly violated Southern University’s anti-hazing policies. The university did not disclose specific actions that led to the allegations.
During the investigation, the fraternity has been issued a cease-and-desist order, which temporarily strips the group of all rights and privileges as an active organization on campus.
Under the suspension, fraternity members are prohibited from assembling as a group or wearing organizational paraphernalia, including wristbands, clothing, and bags. The fraternity is also barred from reserving campus spaces or buildings.
The letter tells the Alphas if they are to violate suspension rules it could result in their ability to perform in greek life activities.
