Right in the middle of his Junior season, LSU Cornerback Ashton Stamps has left the team and is expected to enter the transfer portal.
During the 2024 season, Ashton Stamps started all 13 games for the LSU Tigers. This turned into a more shocking change, whereas halfway through the current season, he has only played in three.
Early Wednesday morning, Brian Kelly was asked by the media about Stamps’ current status on the LSU team, he quickly replied with, “He is no longer on the roster,”
Stamps was a big leader for the Tigers’ defense during his time at LSU. Compared to last season, Stamps had a total of 43 tackles, nine pass breakups, and played 700 snaps, whereas this season, he only played 18 snaps, all coming in the matchup against LA Tech.
Although no one knows the exact reason for Stamps’ departure just yet, there have been some serious additions in the cornerback room this year.
With multiple players in the same position group as Stamps having very successful seasons thus far.
Mansoor Delane, PJ Woodland, and DJ Pickett have been showing out for the defensive backs. Delane had a season high of 11 tackles against Ole Miss. He also had an important interception during the Clemson game to start his season off. Although Pickett is new to the team and is in his first year in college football, he had six tackles against South Carolina and already has both a sack and an interception under his belt.
With some big plays also coming from safeties AJ Haulcy and Tamarcus Cooley, it seems that the secondary has pushed past the mark of previous years.
With all these teammates playing well and having increased playing time, this could be a serious factor for Stamps’ exit from the team.
Now with Stamps’ departure, LSU will need to move forward, adjusting its roster and preparing for the rest of the season.
