LSU linebacker Whit Weeks’ lingering ankle injury that has sidelined him since the game against South Carolina is a broken ankle, he confirmed on Tuesday.
“I hardly even practiced before that game, just because I could hardly even walk on it,” Weeks said. “Then I just kind of sucked it up for that game. But then I remember on Sunday, I was taking a shower, and I couldn’t even stand in the shower. ‘I probably need to go get this checked out.’ I got an MRI on it, and sure enough, it was broken.”
Weeks suffered the injury during the Ole Miss game, but it’s the same ankle he dislocated in LSU’s Texas Bowl matchup versus Baylor in December.
Following the South Carolina game, former head coach Brian Kelly said Weeks was sidelined by a bone bruise.
“It cracked right down the middle,” Weeks said. “So once it’s healed, it’s healed. But it’s going to take just a couple more weeks, hopefully. I’m trying to turn that corner, but just struggling.”
The injury has kept Weeks sidelined for four games, three of which LSU lost.
Weeks had a chance to return against Western Kentucky, and he did, but in a limited role, only playing one drive and coming out of the locker room later in the game in street clothes.
Weeks’ return on Saturday meant more than just a positive trend for his health; it meant he got to be on the field with both of his brothers, Zach and West Weeks, at the same time.
“It’s been a long journey these last six weeks just trying to get healthy, but to get back out there with both of my brothers, it was a cool experience,” Weeks said.
Weeks aims to play more snaps versus Oklahoma this weekend, looking to play closer to 30 snaps, he said.
Last season against Oklahoma, Weeks had a breakout game with 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble in a 37-17 win for the Tigers.
“I’ve been focused on just my rehab every single day, trying to get everything around my ankle as strong as possible,” Weeks said. “Just to protect it a little bit more, to be able to get out there and play this last week.”
