The LSU Women’s Club Basketball Team operates just one mile away from the lights in the PMAC, but this does not stop them from giving their all and showing up for one another.
In a club that requires competitive ambition while balancing the realities of student life, personal bonds have definitely become this team’s strongest asset. For many players, this club has offered an entry point into college basketball without all the pressure of Division One expectations and demands. What began as a recreational outlet slowly evolved into a network of trust and sisterhood.
“Those people became my friends for my entire four years. Every time a new group comes in, we still mesh, and we still get together. It’s just kind of become a second family for me,” President of the club Bailey George stated.
All of these players played basketball for a significant time in their lives. Most, coming out of high school with a passion to continue their sport. This club has given these women a chance to still feel connected to their drive for playing basketball.
“When I came here, I wanted to find something that I could still connect with and play basketball at an organized level. But also, it was low commitment, we only practiced twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we traveled sometimes on the weekends. So, balancing it with school life, I feel like this is the perfect situation for me,” George mentioned.
The club’s structure is student-led practices, volunteer coaching, and self-made schedules that require communication and management within the team. Without the close unit this group has formed over time, the team’s logistics would not be the same.
In a competitive collegiate setting, athletes tend to face a lot of pressure between school, work, sports, and their personal lives. But LSU’s Women’s Club Basketball has changed that narrative and made a team that balances friendship and a love for the game. As their program grows, their tight bonds will remain as a driving force behind every practice, game, and step forward.
