LSU Women’s Basketball took down the No. 2 ranked Texas Lady Longhorns Sunday afternoon in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. 13,200 Tiger fans were in attendance to witness the hard fought battle between the ranked teams.
The Tigers were able to redeem themselves from two previous losses against Vanderbilt and Kentucky to kickoff their conference play.
Toughness was the word used to describe what the team had been missing in previous games, and that is exactly what fans in attendance saw tonight.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey gave both teams props when it came to their effort and fight, “If you’re a true basketball junkie, that was an enjoyable game to watch because both teams had just hard-nosed defense,”
Despite the strong physicality coming from the Longhorns LSU pushed through and was able to outrebound and hold the Horns to 11 total turnovers and 14 fast breaks.
Guard Mikaylah Williams explained how much of an emphasis Coach Mulkey places on defensive play, “That’s something I came into the game taking personally, and that’s something I’ve really wanted to be better at.”
Williams was the leading scorer for LSU racking up 20 points, 7 rebounds, a career high 5 steals, and a crucial 3-pointer in the last 2 minutes.
The last time LSU beat an AP top 5 ranked team was in 2023, the same year the Lady Tigers secured their first NCAA National Championship.
The Tigers are looking to maintain this momentum as they hit the road heading to Norman, Oklahoma where they will face off against the Sooners in their 5th consecutive game in conference play, Sunday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. CT.
