The No. 21 ranked LSU Men’s tennis team defeated Rice University 5-2 on Monday at the LSU Tennis Complex. The Tigers remain undefeated and they have now moved onto 6-0.
Starting with doubles, LSU started off strong taking the first point against Rice. LSU’s Erik Arutiunian and Matias Ponce de Leon picked up a 6-3 victory and Olaf Pieczkowski and Enzo Kohlmann won their set 6-2.
LSU’s Andrej Loncarevic and Sasa Markovic were tied 3-3 with Rice’s players, but doubles came to a stop when Arutiunian and Leon got the win.
Transitioning out of doubles into singles, LSU momentum continued to pick up. Arutiunian continued to show he ruled the court as he was the first to finish his match 6-3, 6-2.
Markovic finished right behind him with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Loncarevic added another point for the Tigers, defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-0.
Kohlmann was next to finish. After going back and forth and having a tough fight, Kohlmann finished with a win 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, adding another point to the Tigers final score and clinching the match. After clinching the match, Leon and Pieczkowski continued to play. Although Pieczkowski fell short to the Owls 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, Ponce de Leon closed it out with a win of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
The Tigers will be back Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. in the LSU Tennis Complex where they will take on Tulane University in a Louisiana showdown.
