Over 13,000 fans filled the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for Saturday night’s primetime matchup where the Tigers and the Gamecocks put on a show.
From tip-off it was undeniable that the highly anticipated game would be electric. The squads came out hot and fast going shot for shot nearly the entire first half. LSU was 16-29 overall going 2-5 from three and 6-9 from the free throw line. South Carolina went 16-36 overall, 7-12 from 3 and shot 2-4 from the line.
Each team featured standout perfoermers. South Carolina’s Tessa Johnson had 16 points. Flau’Jae Johnson held down the Tiger offense with 14 points and 4 total rebounds.
However, it was crucial missteps in the final moments that kept the Tigers underwater. The team went 14-23 overall from the line with Milaysia Fulwiley, Grace Knox, and Johnson missing game changing opprotunties.
Despite having the upper hand at the rim, and limiting their turnovers, when it mattered most the Tigers couldn’t get their shots in order.
“When you look at the stat sheet, I can’t be too critical of many things,” Head Coach Kim Mulkey said when asked to assess team performance. “We didn’t turn it over much, we out-rebounded them, we got to the foul line, more thant them…..we still had a chance to win the ball game.
The Tigers now fall to 0-18 against the gamecocks. The Purple and Gold will head to oxford, where they’ll meet a hot Ole Miss Rebels team.
