Mardi Gras is a tradition here in Louisiana; however, it still faces a massive waste issue.
According to Keep Louisiana Beautiful, the floats throw out about 2.5 million pieces of single-use plastics each year.
These plastics often end up in wastelands or clog pipe systems in Louisiana.
a possible solution? biodegradable beads.
A group of LSU students has come up with the idea to create these types of beads to eliminate waste.
The “plant-me” beads are made out of 3d printing material, and contain okra seeds, allowing the beads to be planted and for plants to grow.
LSU student Mackenzie Holderbein spoke about her opinion on what Mardi Gras waste does to the environment.
“I think it’s a good idea for there to be some sort of way to benefit the environment and the areas around it that are affected by the mardi gras beads.”
Plans for mass production of these beads during the 2027 season are in place, so when next year’s floats roll around, be on the lookout for some of these beads to plant yourself.
