LSU Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kim Mulkey spoke to the media after an 89-73 Senior Night win over Tennessee.
After a slow start from the Tigers, LSU was able to come out with the win, but before halftime, Tennessee was dominating. Before going back after halftime, Kim had one message and that was to be more physical.
“Don’t settle for anything outside the paint,” Mulkey said. “Just be physical. At halftime, one of the messages I gave is we’re not very physical. This doesn’t fit our idea of what we’re supposed to be doing. I thought we became more physical rebounding. I thought we got more physical by taking the ball off the dribble and getting to the paint.”
This was a bittersweet game for Mulkey, as Thursday was Senior Night, saying goodbye to Amiya Joyner, Flau’jae Johnson and Izzy Besselman. Taking this into account, Mulkey had a few words to say about the seniors.
“I just think in one year, Amiya has been able to contribute and hold her own, as that is pretty hard to do in a program like ours,” Mulkey said. “I’ve known Izzy since second grade, and she’s a great young lady and teammate.”
“Flau’jae… When I think of LSU and all the tremendous athletes that have played sports here, her name is going to be right up there with them. She’s all over this campus and community and she’s very generous. Her soul is pure, but the greatest of all is she stayed four years at LSU and she will graduate, when you rarely see that.”
LSU will go on the road to travel to Starkville to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs for their final game in the regular season. They will play Sunday at 3 p.m. and fans will be able to watch it on the SEC Network.
