LSU baseball head coach Jay Johnson spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon as the Tigers prepare for their last home series of the year against the Florida Gators.
After a beatdown in Athens last weekend, LSU’s hopes of the postseason are slim to none. Johnson knows it, too. Now, the Tigers have one last path to make it to the NCAA Tournament by winning the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama.
However, in order for them to find that momentum, Johnson expects his team to focus on what’s ahead. With star players likely not returning next season, such as sophomore center-fielder Derek Curiel and junior right-fielder Jake Brown, Johnson wants to make one final push at Alex Box Stadium in front of their home crowd.
“I’m glad we’ll have an opportunity to recognize them,” Johnson said. “With Jake [Brown], Steve [Milam], and Derek [Curiel], this is gonna be the last time they play here. I think they’ll give everything they have this weekend.”
No. 9 Florida (34-18, 15-12 SEC) also looks to make a powerful finish to end the regular season, as it’s on track of becoming a potential top eight seed heading into the NCAA Tournament. The Gators travel to Baton Rouge as the No.2 team in the SEC and by going up against a team like that, Johnson described what team the Tigers look forward to facing.
“Talented,” Johnson said. “[Brendan] Lawson is one of the best players in college baseball. I think they’re capable of beating anybody and everybody. They have a lot to play for this weekend.”
Despite the Gators having the upper hand heading into this weekend, Johnson noted how no matter win or loss, this series will be used as a place of growth heading into next weekend’s win or go home mindset.
“It’s a good opportunity for our players,” Johnson said. We’re going to focus on this weekend’s series with an eye on the SEC Tournament next week. We have to be mindful of keeping the team aware of staying in the moment, executing what is in front of you- the pitch, the game, state of mind. It’s my job to set us up for what’s ahead, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
LSU (29-24, 9-18 SEC) faces Florida in its final home series of the regular season starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
