Last night marked the 57th annual Grammy Awards. The show started off with a bang when host LL Cool J welcomed ACDC to the stage. Their smash performance of “Highway to Hell” certainly got the crowd on their feet and proved to the viewers at home that AC/DC has still got it going on.
Another throwback artist, Madonna, proved that she too still has it going on when she performed her latest song “Living For Love”. Her performance was matador themed with Madonna, as the matador of course, and her backup dancers wore horns and bedazzled facemasks. The performance itself may have been strange and risqué, but Madonna did put on a show worth watching and made a grand exit attached to a harness that pulled her up and off the stage.
While the show had a solid opening act the performances to follow were not up to par with the typical Grammy performances or AC/DC’s fun filled excitement. Rather than sticking to their typical pop performances, Katy Perry and Arianna Grande decided to take a more somber route and sang some of their slower, less popular songs. Grande’s performance was more boring and a little too mature in comparison to her recent performance at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Perry’s performance may not have featured any dancing sharks, however it did feature a video of President Obama speaking on domestic violence. The two artist’s performances lacked choreography and it was hard to take the two divas, who are better known for dressing up and busting crazy dance moves, with any sincerity.
The most interesting act of the night came from Pharrell Williams performing his hit single “Happy”. Williams appeared on stage wearing a bellhop costume followed by a group of backup dancers dressed in black hoodies. The meaning behind the bellhop costume may be unclear, but Williams and his dancers made an obvious tribute to Ferguson when they all hit the “hands up” pose to signify the “don’t shoot” message. Overall, the performance may have seemed more crazy or creepy than happy, but it was also a much-needed contribution to the line up of sleepy acts.Williams had a successful night taking home three Grammy’s for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video.
The most iconic performance of the night came from Rihanna, Paul McCartney and Kanye West singing “FourFiveSeconds”. While the combination of artists may be surprising at first, when you listen to the song and hear them all in perfect harmony, it is as if they were all meant to be. What made the performance so iconic was the unexpected simplicity and serenity that they brought to the stage. The trio performed their latest hit just right, full of class and soul. The raw talent of the singers was not overshadowed by any crazy costumes or any extra drama.
The Grammy’s best-dressed celebrity, Taylor Swift, presented the first award of the evening. Swift looked stunning in her high-low, teal Elie Saab gown and daring fuchsia heels. She presented Sam Smith with the Best New Artist Award. Smith ended up taking home three other awards that night including Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Smith took his awards humbly and with much gratitude to everyone who supported him along the way and especially his ex-boyfriend who was the inspiration for “Stay With Me”. According to the awards Smith was able to win from his album, it was probably best that his boyfriend did not stay with him.
Another artist of the night to take home big wins was Beck. Many viewers were both shocked and confused to see a man who they’ve never heard of before beat Beyoncé and Sam Smith for Album of the Year. Beck appeared to be confused as well upon receiving his award. Kanye West made light of the situation when he ran on stage just as he did in 2009 at the VMAs when he told Taylor Swift that Beyoncé should have won Album of the Year. Wests attempt to steal the show was all in good fun; after all, he had a lot to smile about considering he got to perform twice upon returning to the stage after six years. Beck played along with the joke and even asked Kanye to come back up because he didn’t know what to say. After also winning a Grammy for Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Beck was able to thank his children for allowing him to keep them up at night while he was recording the album.
The show concluded with a heartfelt performance of “Take My Hand Precious Lord”, a song her mother sang to her as a child, in an angelic white gown. Beyoncé’s performance led into the true finale where she introduced John Legend and Common to sing their latest song “Glory”. The finale contained another “hands up, don’t shoot” reference from the backup dancers.
Overall, the 2015 Grammy’s turned out to be a little less exciting than viewers had hoped for, but the night resulted in legendary performances and surprising award winners. While it was nice to see Hollywood’s finest on their best behavior tonight, The Grammy’s lacked the essence of fun and funk that the show usually has.
