College baseball is far from starting, but the reigning champs looked eager to be back at Alex Box.
LSU Baseball held an open scrimmage on Sunday afternoon. The team was divided into purple and gold teams for the scrimmage.
For the most part Jay Johnson conducted it like a real game. A few times he scripted certain scenarios like bases-loaded or a runner on third.
Derek Curiel continues to show his discipline and patience on the plate. Jake Brown hit a RBI homerun. Grand Canyon transfer Zach Yorke also had a great day at the plate; he will be effective on this 2026 team.
Curiel took reps in the infield and Chris Stanfield took Curiel’s spot in the outfield. Johnson confirmed that this is a permanent switch.
The team worked on bunting as well. Freshman catcher Omar Serna Jr. had a perfect bunt during the scrimmage.
There is quite some time until the 2026 season rolls around, but baseball-lovers can look forward to an exhibition in Biloxi on November 1.
