The LSU Tigers opened up their Saturday doubleheader against South Carolina with a 6-1 victory over the Gamecocks. Despite an early error that allowed the Gamecocks to score, the Tigers were able to find the gaps when it mattered offensively; and shut down the Gamecocks with great defense.
During the Saturday afternoon game, RBI’s propelled the Tigers ahead. All six scores were runners brought home by a teammate.
The bottom of the second was the inning of most action for LSU. Derek Curiel hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home Mason Braun. Steven Milam singled to the left side to bring Curiel and Omar Serna Jr. across the plate.
Defensively, the Tigers put on a show. Two great double plays from Milam at shortstop helped keep the Gamecocks out of scoring position for the rest of the game.
Sophomore right-hander William Schmidt was dominant on the mound. The starter went six innings with five hits, only one earned run, and a solid seven strikeouts. Schmidt earned the win while 5th-year-senior Grant Fontenot earned himself a save.
The Tigers continue their series against South Carolina with game two starting at 6:30 P.M. Saturday at Alex Box Stadium. They’ll be looking for a series win over the Gamecocks to help keep their postseason dreams alive.
