LSU baseball snapped their 9 game losing streak in SEC play after completing a full series sweep against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Tigers have struggled this season in conference play, and this series sweep marks their first one this season, and LSU’s pitching staff had a huge part in it.
Zac Cowan was a star for the Tigers on Sunday, only allowing the Gamecocks two hits and Cowan held them to zero runs with the help of seven strikeouts in six innings.
Saturday’s double-header also put some of LSU’s best pitchers on display, with Marcos Paz throwing eight strikeouts in five innings and William Schmidt throwing seven strikeouts in six innings.
Head Coach Jay Johnson was extremely happy with the way his team performed this series.
“The pitching staff all weekend was great and no outing was better than that one today.”
LSU had an extraordinary weekend at the plate, with stars Cade Arrimbide, Mason Braun and Omar Serna Jr. all sending their own shots over the wall.
Center Fielder Derek Curiel had an outstanding offensive performance as well, leading the team in batting average with a 0.335, while also adding two RBI’s to his stat sheet.
Coach Jay Johnson had expressed some frustration earlier on the season, but that feeling seems to be fading.
“We haven’t played great defense or pitched well at times. Offense has really come along, but that competitiveness within games, I think you’re seeing it in the totality of the season.”
The Tigers, who are coming off of a 2025 National Championship, came into the season ranked No.1, but quickly fell after losing early in the season to unranked teams like Sacramento State and Northwestern, which would drop LSU out of the top 25.
However, the Tigers have made a comeback, and they are going into the last two weeks of the regular season with a record of 28-21.
The Tigers will need to have a strong finish to their season if they hope to work their way into the postseason, and the team hopes to maintain their defensive and offensive production up as they face Tulane Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CST in the Box.
